Here is a list of gearbox codes
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... fo/gbx.htm
best to match the same ratio box to the engine you have or it will struggle depending on how loaded you got your van
i see DU is a 4 spd, so best get one of these otherwise you got a whole world of pain sourcing/changing to a 5spd gear linkage etc. note some 4 spd, notably the best ratio DK box is from an Aircooled and has different linkages even though it's still a 4 speed (they are early vans, pre 82 or 83 i believe) other petrol boxes are fine if ratio's good, but you'll have to swap the bellhousing and input shaft over to keep the diesel one as attached to your jx - simple enough.

Brent

the van is a 1983 westfaila ?

yup the 3H box will suit your engine fine and with supplied gear lever & linkage will be tidy when swapped over. have seen a 3H for sale recently for 350quid, but the lever/linkage parts are harder to come by so your deal looks ok. have to get used to the new setup then for 1st to 2nd, bit weird that dogleg.
will be fun trying to set it up so all gears select, i've yet to embark on that task for my 4spd to 5spd conversion soon. plenty of info on the wiki and previous posts about that though i'm sure i've read. You might want to think about replacing some bushes/bellows covers etc while you got it all out, give it a clean etc, makes for a smoother gear shift and less problems later on.
then there's always posting something new when you run out of patience
good luck
