Snapped Gear Stick

Gear stick just snapped about 8 inches from the floor! is this a common fault? its a 5 speed box on a 1.6 TD. Second Hand gear stick with bits required

Quite easily! Where the collar that holds the spring in place is the gearstick is drilled about 3mm to locate the grub screw holding it, this causes a weakness that can cause the lever to fracture over the course of 20 years of trying to find gears.

Mine went last Christmass eve with a 250 mile return trip :shock: . Manage to bodge it by putting a steel tube sleeve (B&Q) over and drilling and tapping for m4's on each half.... Got me home and left it like that for a few months!

Fair enough,but if I had to put that much strain on a gearstick to find gears I would think something was wrong.I bet mine will snap now just to prove me wrong.
