the question is....

DO i just replace the vacuum unit or upgrade? to a dizzy with a centrafugal advance?

engines a 1.9 dg btw

you do have electronic ignition?
your van left the factory with it

i was led to believe, that a good upgrade for the vacuum advance distributor. Would be a centrifugal advance one ( from jk ) meaning i could do away with the vac unit and the ignition module.

is this wrong? ifso, i'm glad i asked first

Points ignition is a step back into pre-history.
VW abandoned points ignition for the precise electronic method when the t25 was launched.
JK are lieing, the 009 distributor is a relic that belongs on a bay.

Whats up with your OE distributor?

just buy a new vac advance unit they aren't too expensive and cheaper than the c r a p that JK are selling and passing off as fit for use, keep it original, don't go backwards,
brickwerks will have the vac unit, I've got a complete used dg disi sat on the shelf with a good one on it

Mine has the 009 - it had been 'upgraded' prior to me buying it - so it is on my list of things to do to revert it back to electronic ignition. No doubt when I do try, I'll find out that it wasn't a case of retrograding because it was better, but more likely because something is wrong with the old dizzi/controller unit (came in a bag with van spares) - I'll find that out when I start digging, all good fun!

The reasons these get fitted probably vary:

* JK says it is good, if you don't know better you agree
* Problems with original electronic controller assumed to be hugely pricey - fit the cheaper 009 unit instead
* People 'know' about points, but not the black magic electrickery, so retrograde to 'what they know'

None of these are good reasons though, so sorting the original issue is much better than circumventing by fitting old technology

There is very little to go wrong with the electronic distributor.
The most common culprit is the hall sender failing. Not a cheap item to replace, then to find the fault lies in the ECU.
ECU's are cheap or can easily be borrowed.
