I know this has been done to death, but has anyone considered it being mounted on the side like the Landrover Wolf?

Obviously it would need to be mounted on the opposite side to the sliding door!

This was at Syncro25. The wheel is recessed into the side and mounted on the inner panel which must have some internal bracing to support the load.

The side mounted spare wheel on the landy is always getting clouted off trees when off roading, also as mentioned above the amount of people that forget they are there when parking is unbelievable.

That side mounted doka looks cool with the wheel there. I think it's not too bad having a spare there if you have a box on the back that hangs out just as far. Least that way you lose your tire before your home

But they are Landy drivers!
surely you cow take it off when greenlaning if it's that tight or just use your mirrors ????

It will stick out no further that the Syncro wing mirrors, the wolf Landy has it mounted high rather than low down as the Doka is.
As mine is a van it may be better bolted to the side high up as i have just bought a bike rack for the back!!

I think I'm going to make a bracket and mount it on the half-height bulkhead, giving the Mrs a fighting chance of changing the tyre if it comes to it (easy to roll out and no high lifting required) plus a tailored vinyl cover to keep it all tidy
That frees up the front end for a fixed bashguard and a second LPG donut tank when it gets converted

My original idea was to mount it at the front...

However if I mount it high up on the Off side this will also protect the air vent

I could simply Hook it to the outside guttering and then bolt the bottom to the inside of the redundant sliding door runner?

I feel a project coming on......after I get it back on the road!!

I'd be wary of fixing to the gutter, dont think they would like it much if something was tugging them sideways.

Look at the mess Neil made of his doka gutter when the CB aerial got snagged...
Why mount heavy things like the spare high up, where they are hard to access and only serve to unbalance the vehicle?
Nige, have you had any overheating problems with your front-mounted spare?

i dont think that your the first to think of this, like most thing the germans have finished the thought, just dont know if it would poke through in to the inside of the van, what do you recon?
