fuel filter & Turbo questions 1.6td

Seasons Greetings to all,

my latest van has been causing me no end of grief since I did some preventitive maintenance. What started as seals, belts and gaskets overhaul turned into new injectors, injector pipes, glow plugs and starter motor! £520 later and van still running awful. Had to have diesel specialist set up fuel pump and timing due to poor running and lack of power. Then we realised the boost diapham link rod was not opening gate on fuel pump & not allowing extra fuel when Turbo spins. Adjusted that and it is now opening halfway which leads me to my 1st question...

1. Is the Link rod meant to open fully? When I disconnect the link rod from fuel pump gate, the gate can open all the way but with link rod attached it will only only open halfway.

So, on with my story! Van wont start unless you keep turning it (and I mean keep turning it). After 40-50 fires it slowly coughs into life and is then ok for rest of that day! Have been advised is probably air in fuel system and to change what is a very old fuel filter. Ordered one and it looks identical but has an extra fitting on the top for a hose that mine does not have. So on with my second question...

2. Is there a way of blanking off extra fitting/hole on top of listed fuel filter or do I need another? Here is link to item:

There is the two inlets for the fuel pipes but there is this whacking great hole/fitting there also.

Thanks in advance for any help. Apologies for the essay but really want to get my van running right as it is starting to make running one a pain in the a***

Regards

Tony

There are two types of fuel filters .The one you have provided the JK link would have a valve that fits into the hole and acts as a thermostat control for the fuel return to the tank. The other type has only a flow to the fuel pump& a return connection back to the fuel filter that is the one you need.GSF carparts would stock this fuel filter.

Brickwerks are the best for fuel filters, looks like yours is the earlier style.

Thanks for your help. Thought that may be the case, but I did get it from GSF so am surprised they sent me wrong filter. Useful to know what fitting is for though. In Germany at mo or I'd be on the blower to them. Vielen Dank
