Hey up people , hope you all had a good christmas .

I changed both sets of shoes today Wiki was splendid help once again and made it easy , anyway I noticed that I have a little lip on the edge of the drum about 0.5mm so didnt stop the drum from coming off easily but kinda makes the adjustments just a tad more difficult than if the lip wasn't there and I could see the gap between shoe and drum . So question is , is there a reason why I shouldn't grind the lip off , I'll wait for an answer cause maybe there is supposed to be a lip , I'm gonna refurb and paint the drums tomorrow anyway so no rush

No design reason for the lip. A lip is an indication that your drum is worn. It also prevents easy removeal of the drum if your Auto adjuster is working OK.

If it's just a small lip. I usually chock the other three wheels, Fix the drum on wrong way round (dished side out), using some washers to pack under the nuts, and with the van on blocks, put in first gear and start the engine. With drum now revolving, I grind off the lip CAREFULLY with a small angle grinder, being careful not to mark the friction area.

If it's a serious lip, I would put new drums on. If in doubt, new drums.

cheers guys , well the lip wasn't that bad paddle disc on a 4" grinder did the job , cleaned up the drums with a 60 grit sanding disc on the grinder WOW came up like polished steel , seemed a shame to primer over them and for a brief moment I thought about wet and drying them to a polish and lacquer.

hmmm just had a thought I didn't use a heat proof paint on the primer not quite sure of topcoat yet ...... Will they get hot enough to warrant using heat proof paints ?

Hammerrite smooth works well on drums.
