Do you have a syncro with a chattery driveline, in particular does it when hot in neutral, clutch released, chatter chatter chatter at engine revs, goes away when you drop the clutch - I'm particularly asking for experience from the diesel boys and girls, cos WBX's generally don't seem to have this issue, but if yours does then do post up

If you do then do you have a standard set up engine and clutch or something different ie AAZ, TDi, VR6clutch/wbx friction plate etc.....

I'm asking for more help with this 'cos I've had a gearbox returned by customer with this issue; I have heard it on video; I want to get to the bottom of this so wanted to replicate the noise and have a close listen with stethascope to determine source if possible, so Pete PC52 and Sharon fitted it into the green single cab (Andy S's old one) with an AAZ, thus replicating the customers installation, and it didn't chatter, ran up for a few hours in gear to warm up then driven on the road and nice and quiet and good as gold, left idling no chatter, that's a with new hybrid clutch set up on a 1Z flywheel with standard T3 input shaft; but Pete and Sharon say their old one's in the yellow and blue ones chatter a bit when hot, but again this morning they were all being quiet when tested ! How much does temperature affect it ?

If the noise is only when the clutch is released (i.e. pedal down), surely it must be the release bearing, or possibly the gearbox input shaft rattling inside the crankshaft pilot bearing, as the input shaft won't be turning.

Shame you didn't have the opportunity to see and listen to it installed. Could be a b'stard to diagnose.
Could just be chattering springs in the clutch centre if it's past it's best? I have had this before on a duff friction plate. Was a new one fitted when the box was re-installed or how many miles were on the clutch beforehand? Does the driver have an agressive driving style?

Mine chatters, quiet with pedal down altho sometimes doesn't chatter at all aaz with 2.1 uprated clutch plate on 1z flywheel but drives fine ???

Yes mine does it but only when the g box oil is realy hot and the air temp is 30c +.My guess is that the noise is coming from the g/reverse gear.
The rattle stops if i dip the clutch.
It also goes when the oil cools down [5 mins or so].

Yep mine does to, it did with the JX and it does with the AAZ, I thought it was the UJ on it's way but maybe not if mine isn't the only one

When i had the AAZ in my van with the JX clutch setup i never had any chatter.
The chattering began when i installed the 1Z TDi with VR6/1Zflywheel/WBXfriction plate. Same gearbox (as you know) didnt chatter before, does now.

How much does temperature affect it ?

I have noticed that when i first start my van, there's no chatter and that after a short drive the chattering will start. However it seems to start chattering even after the smallest/shortest of drives. How much temperature would be created by say a 1/4 mile journey?

Mine also does that. Does it from startup and stays that way, gets a wee bit louder as it gets hotter. Never bothered me as still drives perfect. Had new jx and 5 sp. gearbox fitted by VW in 1999 and started bout a year after they were fitted. 44000 miles since and still going strong.

Me too, its intermittent, have noticed it, AFN mtdi setup, Russel told me what it was , don't remember what he said but maybe he does

Interestingly enough when I had the 1y with normal JX clutch set up mine didn't chatter at all I always put it down to that dodgy geezer who does gearboxes in Warrington

Have the same issue, 1z electronic with 1z standard clutch, flywheel and tdi input shaft.
Goes quite when you push the clutch pedal down. Does'nt do it when the engine is cold.

My newest Alfa has a similar noise, although it has only done 50,000 miles. I decided some time ago it is due to the springs in the driven plate.
