weber single carb conversion success stories

i am about to replace my pierburg carbs wich are knackered, now i have been told that for straight forward reliable running i should fit a weber sing carb conversion kit, the guy who has told me this has fitted many of them to many t25 and has told me that despite the negative opinions of them on forums they are good if you just want straight forward reliable running and ease of setup,
now i want to hear only from people who have had theese kits fited and have positive feedback of theese carb kits, i know alot of people on here hate them but i have been told by 2 different specialists that they are a good cost effective solution,
i just want my camper to go camping in and poodle about in,
my questions are , are they easy to fit? will the engine bay close properly with this fitted? do they need to be modified at all to run on a t25 2.0litre cu engine?

whoever told you that is a mong simple and straigtforward and by no means a specialist in carburettion.
fit it and you will regret it
plus in this weather you will suffer from carb icing due to the vast size \ length of the inlet manifold tract bet they didnt tell you that did they?.
i cant force you to fit the dells but i honestly cant reccomend that weber thing. its gash
the choke sizes are smaller than stock you will be effectivly strangling the engine,you will need to boot it to have any sort of go from it.
The inlet tract is huge so the volumetric efficiency is vastly reduced, its a lazy get out for worn carbs for clueless people im afraid
it like dells will need setting on a rolling road as its very underjetted from the box
but seeing as you only want positives i wont say any more on the matter

Don't. Just don't.
had twin webbers on my 2lt air cooled....friggin nightmare. Things never ran properly - blank spots, backfires. gave up, sold the webers and put the stock solexes on (why is your a/c on pierburgs?) and it ran alot better.

ps - the specialist that has fitted the carbs....surely he must have customers nearish? If he is so confident in the quality of the carbs, ask for a customer recommendation! When i have had sommat done well I am usually VERY keen to show it off!! So, if there are a fair few customers very pleased with the conversion, ask if you could have a look-see and a ride out!
Just an idea. Then you can see if the engine lid fits. You can feel how the thing runs and sounds.
Not liking Jason's description of strangling the engine though!

em the carbs that ran bad and backfired were ict s yes?
these are next to useless on a cu. as you say the options are refurb the solex or fit dells
its people like jk who peddle these bloody unsuitable carbs who need shooting as people see em in the catalogue and think they work when they bloody dont.
the single weber doesnt even fit under the frigging engine lid

For straight forward reliable running why not go with what VW fitted to the van in the first place, twin Solex's?
Why do you think the carbs you've got are knackered? Ten days ago everything was looking up?
SUCESS AT LAST!!!
new fuel pump, fuel filter and idle cut off valve have been fitted and the van is now running like a dream!
well when i say a dream its not actually quite there yet but it does run and drive,
If you're lucky the carbs you've got could still be serviceable but they just need setting-up for the new fuel pump. If the carbs really are shot it might be worth getting the engine compression checked because if they are worn out the engine might be in a similar state.

yup tho fitting twin idf / ida s is a different story (same as dells!!)

No Jason, they were twin 40 IDFs. So there were places it seemed to run nice....but it wasn't right....and it was Juicy.
They had the smaller pancke air filters on, and with a bit of wadding cut away, just about fitted under the engine lid.
oh, and they came with the van, when I was new to the T25 (first van) and at the beginning of the very steep learning curve!
ok for the unitiated....what dellorto do we need for 2.1 water cooled if we wanted to stay single or go double? Can you put twin webers on the water cooled? If so, what ones. Only reason I ask is that I like to know alternatives just in case my originals expire. Running LPG...would this make a difference?

just out of intrest em what dizzy was your bus running with the webers?
did you ever take it to a rolling road to diagnose the running probs?
a lot of people tend to retro bodge a 009 on when fitting carbs which has a lot to do with poor running

Yeah - it had the 009 as well...that was as pooh as everyone on here said they are (again came with the bus). I stripped everything out and went stock - new dizzy, coil and carbs.
Maybe I could have gotten away with just putting the stock dizzy on, but was advised at the time to return to stock. Which I did - cost nowt as did a 3 way swap through the club!
Actually, I did do a rolling road to set the webers up properly, but the engine was too knackered to do it! So, got a recon (the engine shop, erith, never again), but it still didn't run right, and was even worse on LPG. So went stock.
That improved the situation heaps - no flat spots, ran smooth until the engine, about 20 mins outside of warrenty was discovered to be running on three, and nothing we could do would sort it, and reconners didn't wanna know. Cut me losses and broke the bus.

ok what about the twin solexs from cb performance that jk and vw heritage sell? are theese just standard replacments for the standard carbs, if not then wot about getting my origional pierburg/solex's wot ever they are refurbed, who can i get to do this for me and how much would it cost, is there any1 on this forum who i can send my carbs to to get them refurbed?

a real nice chap but you will need to go to him in chester area
a very worthwhile trip
the jk ones are not direct identical replacements
the original solex are no longer available.
you are going thru what lots have over the years, and are just passing on our experience, its up to you if you heed it!!
