i have a 1982 2.o litre cu Aircooled camper, i am about to buy some new carbs as the sandard pierburgs need repacing, the new carbs will be fitted by a vw specialist who will set them up properly on a rolling road

so far i have been looking at the vw heritage catalogue and i am looking at either:


weber 34ict's - no choke £395.36

empi 34epc - no chokes £326.04

or

c.b. perormance solex carburettor kit - automatic electric chokes

can you please tell me wich of the above are the best choice for reliability and performance to run on my 2.0 litre cu engine

and if anyboddy knows if i can buy the cheaper anywre else that would be great

I had a Weber fitted to my 1.9DG and after much fiddling and fettling it ran ok but it was never as good as the Pierburg. I ended up getting the Pierburg re-built by Gower and Lee and it ran like it was brand new.

Try a pair of dellorto 36 DRLAs. Had some on on air cooled engine a while back and they were ace. Just need to get chokes and jets right and they will be your best option.

elmo if i was in your shoes i would be fitting dual twin choke delortos

look for drla 36 or 40mm

more power performance and mpg

icts are "pooh" as is the single central weber

do a search for delortos

What wrong with the carbs you've got fitted at the mo'?

If you've got a VW specialist with a rolling road handy they might be able to re-jet and set-up what you've got for less than £100. The risk of springing +£300 for new carbs is you'll end up fitting them on an engine that's as knackered as the carbs were that you've taken off.

my pierburgs are in abit of a state and have been told by many people that my engine would be much more reliable and achieve better mpg wit a set of weber or empi carbs, i cannot aford to pay morethan £400 for a set of carbs so i guess delortos are out of the question.

why do people on here seem so against weber carbs, wot is actually wrong with them? i have spoken to lots of people who claim they are great including the vw restoration people who are doing my t25 for me, maybe people think they are crap because they didnt hae the set up properly?

wot about the solex carbs they look good to me?

there must be some people on r who use aftermarket webers and like them

yes that's just it..
webers HAVE to be set up using a rolling road.
then after all that they are no better (infact worse) than the pierburg.

I have seen and heard a 2L Aircooled on Dellorto drla's and my 2.1 DJ struggles to keep up under acceleration

ok so dellorto drla's, how much? were from? can i buy them with everything i need as a kit?

JasonK will spot your post, he has more experience of fitting them than me. So I'd wait for a reply from him.

My pal richnewton fitted them with jasons advice and that old Devon is one quick bus.... and it sounds sooo beautiful.

you can buy a kit from stateside tuning. jim calvert is a grumpy bugger but knows his onions

or do like i did

i bought mine of ebay for 100 quid for a matched pair

sent em to be sonic bathed and rebuilt, new needles gaskets etc 35 quid per carb

short inlets from csp which need to be bossed for brake servo vaccume

new linkage from csp

short bugpack filters

what you will then have is effectivly one carb per cylinder allowing precise tuning

the sound is awesome too

your van will fly with these on accept no substitute

so i can just buy the duall 40 dellorto kit and that comes with everying i need?

seems amazing for £430 does this kit literally come with everything i need?

yup around 430 depending on inlets etc but bank on some rolling road time of approx 2hrs to jet it bob on
