Identification of a mystery

Hi everyone,

I have recently had to get into the oily bit for a couple of reasons ie. Fitting new starter and alternator. Since doing so the van (1989-90, 2L petrol water cooled) seems to be missing at low revs. When in forth gear at speed i lift off the accelerator, then fully accelerating again, the engine feels like it's juddering, almost like I'm driving over the rumble strips on hard shoulder.
Now, when having a look for any obvious issues I noticed that there was a small black plastic cap, approx. 1" dia. sat on engine. Directly behind this, towards the rear of the engine on the top there us a hole that looks like it was made to house this cap. The opening has what looks like back exhaust debris coming from it. I can't fit the exhisting cap because it's partially damaged (now I can't find it!!!). So does anyone know what the cap/opening is for and why the vAn judders
. Sorry it's such a long query, any help appreciated.

does your engine have injection or has it a carburettor Nook?

that cap is not your problem, it's just a plug that a mechanic uses to find TDC from the flywheel.

OK well it reads like the folks that fitted it have disturbed something.
make sure all the vacuum pipes are connected at the back of the carb and on to the air filter
Make sure all the plug leads are connected correctly

Eh? You said carburetted so it's a 1.9 DG then? A picture would definitely help us to help you
