After a gearbox out job, we were tighting up the bolts and next thing that happended the sump split and out came the engine oil. I'm told this is a common problem and weak point on the design? Is that right? I've searched this forum and can't see a mention. Any comments anyone?

the threads go in ther sump a lot. did you try and pull the box up by using the sump fixings. can you get it repaired or is it too far gone.

Sounds like you tightened up the gearbox bolts without slackening off the sump first and so tightened up a gap between housing and sump - something had to give!

On closer inspection it can be seen that the bolt landing face on the bell housing side has all but corroded so leaving a gap between that and the sump, and as you say something had to give!. Interesting though, what would cause corrosion like that and more seriously I need a new JX bell (clutch?) housing.I got the sump welded which is OK for now but the main problem still excists and I've not fully tightened the lower bolt for now.
