There is a chance in the future that I may have access to a spray booth, the trouble is that the building it is in has doors too small to fit a high top.

How easy would it be to remove and refit the high top from an 88 westy and is it safe to do without destroying it?

That sounds like a lot of work to remove it, I suppose its a toss up between the work removing the top and getting a spray finish or the extra work flatting back and painting with rustoleum.

No way worth the effort just to get it in the garage.

A westy roof is a totally different beast to an aftermarket hi top. On a westy (and vw high roof which i've got) the fibreglass roof is fitted instead of the steel roof, not just glued on top. There's a flange all the way around the base of the roof which fits under a steel lip above the windscreen, has steel retaining strips folded over the side flanges in the gutters, and is rivetted across the rear above the tailgate, as well as being glued down, and sealant over the top of everything. I removed my roof at the start of the year (due to leaks and water damage) and it was a big job.
