Trying to get the right hg for my 1986 1.6 td- think had an engine change. Part no. on head is 068103373T with three "nipples" above it. To the left of these are three nos: 163. Does anybody know what exact engine it is? Have had to change two wrong head gaskets already...third time lucky?

The part number you quote is the head casting only, which can't be traced back on the VW system as the "head" is the casting together with the dowels and other minor parts thus the JX bare head with no valves or cam is part number 068 103 351 K, and complete with valves and cam is 068 103 265 EX , the X denoting this is an exchange part, ie you have to return the old one
why can't you id the gasket itself ? they usually have the number on them and the number of holes tell you the thickness
there aren't exactly many 1.6TD VW/Audi variants and they are fairly interchangeable
