1y Diesel conversion

HI,
Just been offered a 1y engine, from a friend, less that 40k i like the idea of something reliable. before i take it on could someone tell me whats involved swapping it in for my 1.7D. Currenlty got a RA/SA td engine, but low miles and i will just work (i hope) is certainly attractive.
I understand mechanically, it will be a straight swap, thanks to the info i've found on here
however i'm a little confused with the other details, i've read on the forums its a straight swap, etc but then on si's site it says
Code 1Y
Turbo No
Size 1896 (1.9l)
From Golf/Vento/Passat
Power 64 hp @ 4400 rpm
Notes SDi, Fly by wire.
ECU etc. needed.
Suddenly having to fiddle through fly by wire etc, its isnt that straight swap? or am i wrong?
I'd need the ECU for sure too off the donor right? just not sure if he had the ECU.
I guess you could swap pumps over? is that enough? any thoughts, sorry i know this has been covered before im sure just couldnt find anything definitive.

Lots of wiring.
Lots of aggravation.
No extra power.
Go find something simpler, unless you like electronics.

DH thought you liked lots of wiring now
1Y should be a straight forward conversion as have the same in my panel van, but what vehicle is it out of and what year, this may narrow down if the pump has lots of electrics etc.

That was my thread, engines still in the shed while I finish off the body, so still have not had a chance to play.
I think Weaselchin lost the will to live trying to get his going. he's proberly the best one to answer this.

seems that the 1y and aaz are identical.. certainly the haynes diesel manual doesnt differenciate between them except for the aaz having a turbo.
Maybe this is only for maintence though..
realy this is the root of my confusion.. people struggles with 1y's where they seem the same, obviously they are not. just dont want to spend out and spend months tinkering! ..

wookey. look at kermits thread. see the black box, well take a hammer and chisel too it and smash it off ( really ) underneath there is an electrical connection, wire that up to the wire that went to the top of your original pump and thats it !!!!!! it now works. the other wires can be cut they do nothing. oh in between the fuel lines on your new pump there are some wires take them out and replace with the screw and locking bolt from your old pump. change the cam belt while the motor is out..... dont forget the spigot bearing etc(see alternative engine forum). the motor i fitted had 65k miles on it and its solid, so the one your getting should be spot on, i got it from the local free ads paper £160 with box and everything else, i sold the box for £50.
ps you will probably have to tow it around the block in gear to get the fuel through, my starter was too slow. hope this helps
1y success

eyup duck,i too was extremely dubious about bunging one in but mine came out of a non-turbogolf(dont know the year cause i bought it off e-bay),but after i swapped all the bits over, pipe unions, hoses, water pump, alternator, crank pulley, sump, oil pump, top of injector pump, flywheel etc,it was a doddle, there was a pipe from the head with loads of wires in a multiplug, but they were not needed, van fired up almost immediately after sitting for 5 years with blown engine,so its not all doom and gloom

I too am doing this 1Y conversion in my panel van.
Not been over to the van for 7 months now as just had second nipper. Trying to remember what parts I still need to get.
Two questions, what water hose do I use for right hand side of the engine - oil cooler etc. - Is it the same as JX? Do you have to change flywheel or can you use 1Y one?
Thanks
Gareth

i didnt swap the alternator, water pump, fuel pump, pulleys etc, its all golf. but you will need to swap the sump and flywheel, get a pigot bearing change the oil seal in the plate (rear) thats about it really, the water pipes need a bit of bodging, but nothing too bad..

Cheers
My van came with no engine or pipes so need to know a close match to bodge to then.
