fuel pump swap

it seems that replacement mechanical fuel pumps are no longer available for my 2.0 litre cu petrol Aircooled with twin carbs so i have decided to fit a electric one instead. has anyone else done this ? can anyone tell me what pressure range i need to look for and when i wire it up do i just pick up a ignition live feed out of the engine bay ? do i need a fuel return or does the pump regulate fuel flow itself ? this is my first post so hope i have put it in the right section . many thanks .
