This morning as I was getting in the van I notice a rather large oily patch under the engine (1990 1.6 TD) Upon closer inspection what appear s to be the problem is that when running oil is leaking from where the "sandwich" oil cooler screws onto the engine. I tried to tighten up the cooler but it was tight. I have ordered a new oil seal from brickwerks. But is it staight forward to fit? any tips /advice would be greatly appreciated... Also is this kind of leak unusual???

Many Thanks Mark

Hi Mark, I thought i had a head gasket leak a few weeks ago after finding oil in the water, and somebody advised me too change the oil cooler which solved the problem thankfully, an easy job but when i started it up i thought i was leaking oil from the filter but it turned out to be a water slight water leak from the water pipe going into the oil cooler which was dripping over the engine and forming a puddle which gave the appearance of oil. bit long winded that sorry but might be worth a look. Ta Steve , it's definitely oil as I can see it weeping out. All the water pipes are secure and fairly new. As a mater of interest where did you get your oil cooler from and how much was it?

Mark

This afternoon in Arctic conditions I decided to take the oil cooler off in prep for fitting a new seal (hopefully coming Monday from Brickwerks
) Nice and straight forward..
1) Unscrew oil filter
2) Unscrew large oil cooler retaining nut
3) Remove both water feed pipes to oil cooler
4) Gently tap to remove oil cooler off the oil feed pipe.

Upon inspection off the oil seal on the cooler, you can clearly see a bit of damage to the seal..no wonder it leaked(no idea how it got damaged) Whist the the cooler was off I took the time to get the engine degreaser out to clean up all the leaked engine oil Roll on Monday for the new seal..
