Technically no

insurance road tax ect............
I had a J plate rangerover and had to import it into the U.K.
The import process is not as simple as bringing in a German (E.U.) vehicle but is possible. V.A.T. has to be levied on the vehicle and before you get exited the good people of H.M. Customs & Exice decide the value, I paid two bottles of red wine for the rangey but still had a V.A.T. bill
If you get stuck send me a message and I will dig out the paperwork and try and stear you the right way.
Oh and I seem to remember once imported I had to sign a decleration that I wouldn't sell the vehicle within two years

interesting, they decide the value? how do they do that did you need to give them details of milage etc? or did they want the vehicle inspected?

Details of Feb' 2005' as with all goverment stuff it might have changed now.
Private Motor Vehicle-Application for release on payment of Customs Duty, and VAT as applicable or to his friends
c 384
The form requests reciepts and invoices ect and any optional extras fitted but I assume they must also use a price guide as you have a section worded
If you claim that the vehicle is in abnormally poor condition for its age or has defects which affect its value, give details.
This is a very small box though

I put the rangerover as scrap value as it was very dead (note to self use an electric winch next time) and I had to trailor it back. With this in mind they came back to me with a sugested value and V.A.T. due, I could have appealed this but as with all tax it could have gone either way so I paid.
Hope this helps, and if any one does import the next step is D.V.L.A. regional offices

DVLA regional offices are well worth a visit if it's something a bit odd. There's one under a mile from where I work, which makes it SO useful for peculiar enquiries.
Last visit the lovely person behind the desk saved me £160 in road fund license
