if it not showing any cracking or perishing i would use it but i would use sealant behind the rubber as you dont want water sitting behind seal and rotting window frame out

Dont use silicone behind um, thats a bodge! For the cost of new rubber fit it with new, the rubber is designed to stop all ingress of water! Paint the raw edge of steel dont matter what colour as long as its covered!

i would still use sealant behind the new rubbers but only proper windscreen sealant not silicon i have done this on all my cars in a few years time the new windscreen rubber can shrink and let water behind the rubber rotting out the corner of your window frame , this is unnoticeable from the outside of your van till its to late, leaving you with an expensive repair bill , if you use proper windscreen sealant this stays flexible stopping water getting behind the seal and stopping rust starting , the best seals are either genuine vw or status vw

If you fit them properly there is no need for any sealant, I have fitted 100's of windows and never had a problem, like I say in my signature Im only a mechanic so what would I know!!!

Definition of bodge = make a mess of, destroy, ruin
IMHO addding silicone, especially something like weathermate wont be a bodge, might not be makers recommended, but certainly wont "make a mess of, destroy or ruin"

you need a diamond lacing tool if its the type of rubber with the filler strip in the middle, plus bung it in a bucket of hot water for a good 10~20 mins to soften it up!

you only need the tool if you have caravelle style rubbers with the finishing trim , otherwise use electrical wire as its stronger than string and wont cut into your new seals, yes its dead easy fitting windows my mrs can even do it
