I am having an issue with the Eberspacher on my new(old)86 1.6td westfalia.

Its not giving much heat out and is throwing out enough white smoke to get me blacklisted from any campsite I use it on, in addition there is a clicking/clonking noise repeating every second or so.

I have just read the wiki section about it and I am thinking a service and clean are in order (although not sure this will fix the clicking)

Can I remove the Eber and still drive around in the van or will I need isolate the diesel feed first?

I have seen a service kit for fairly cheap http://www.pfjones.co.uk/eberspacher-d2 ... kit-1.html will this one do the job and is it all I will need?

the clicking will be the pump, there a pulse pump not a rotary type pump, think there is a filter in the pump? might be worth cleaning it out

Ah right, that makes sense, shall I use a solvent of some kind to clean it?

White smoke means the fuel is not igniting. Check/replace glow pin/screen. Check errors against list in manual.(page 18) What fault codes are you getting? Are you getting sufficient voltage at the heater whilst you are trying to run it?
No need to isolate if the pump is still connected.

Thanks, I have not looked yet, but will check those points tomorrow. Can I expect to see fault codes somewhere?

If you have the correct 501 timer for it you will get fault codes displayed.
Suggest you read the d2 manual so that you understand the sequence the heater goes through on start up which will lead you to the point at which it is failing.

Since you have an 86 westy , I do not think you will have a timer but the dial control with rocker switches, in the back.
Furthermore the the westy will probably have a D2L and not an aitronic unless the airtonic was retro fitted - the kit your looking at is for the airtonic.

Thanks I didnt realise there was a difference.

Does anyone know how I should be removing it, it is inside a seel box mouted to the underside of the van; do I unbolt the entire box or do I open the box and remove it?

i had a mikuni heater that did that, it had a flame out sensor that got dirty so every so often would have to open it up and clean the sensor they get full of soot dont know if ebers are the same but white smoke is un burnt fuel so its either not lighting or burning badly

Ok cheers i will give that a go.

I just need to know how to get the thing off now, its in a steel box and the bolts that hold the box to the chassis look a bit corroded and access isnt too good to them, so I am hoping that you remove it by opening the steel box, however I don't want to force anything until I find out the best way of removing it.
