I have an '87 converted Syncro ambulance with an Eberspacher D1L heater fitted. The heater has not worked since I bought the van. Well, the fan works when the dashboard switch is turned on but no heat comes out. I have checked the fuel pump and there is no fuel flow through it so the problem might simply be a knackered pump - there is no clicking when the wires are connected. I have checked the fuel filter at the front of the pump. I understand that the pumps have a magnetically operated diaphragm that pulses in accordance with fuel flow required by the heater. I have priced a replacement - around £180 for a new one. I am reluctant to spend this as there may be other problems with the heater that will only come to light when the pump is replaced.

So, it occurred to me that someone might have a pump that they are not using that I could borrow to test my system, or better still, buy at a realistic price.

Test the pump by disconnecting the leads from the heater to the pump (if you don't you will fry the electronics), touch 12v across the terminals - each time you touch the terminal you should get a click. If you don't it is most probably fubarred. If so you could try some taps with an 'ammer (Brummigan spanner) to see if the solenoid is just stuck - it may free it up. Second hand ones go for £20 - £50 on Ebay.
