and it's not me!

I turn the knob to make the heater fan come on and smoke comes from the down behind the dash. Well the smoke comes up in the middle of the dash onto the windscreen.

Nothing smokes when the fan is off?

Not another thing i hear you all say..

1.D watercooled 1984 T25

Any ideas BEFORE i pay the dosh to get the engine changed?

i doubt very much its an engine problem.more a heater unit problem.and that is a pain in the bottom.you will have to strip the dash out...

Firstly m'lady can you tell us if the smoke is from the radiator fan or the
fan blower for the windscreen?

The problem sounds electrical ie; overheated component or short circuit on chaffed wiring or something similar. The only thing is you havn't
mentioned is any fuses blowing etc.

Why would you be thinking of replacing the rear mounted engine when the problem is under the dashboard? :?

ladyelanor is thinking of a engine change at the moment and I bet she is wondering whether it has to go on hold in order to sort out this problem

 I'm learning but not that dizzy. But any help is grateful.

I have found an engine and have it in to be replaced next week.

I am fed up with finding more and more things wrong with the camper and before we pay fo the engine i just want to know how much else we have to spend.

...."Firstly m'lady can you tell us if the smoke is from the radiator fan or the
fan blower for the windscreen".....

Don't think it's the rad fan as it happens when the engine is cold and without even starting.

I thought the third fuse in from the right looked suspect, smoked a bit but hasn't blown as yet. Any ideas as no haynes as only just got the van.

Thanks Louey

This list might be useful for the fuses - check that the suspect one hasn't been replaced with a fuse of a higher rating

and... you're doing fine with all this stuff, you're asking the right questions and probably rightly getting a bit peed off with things going wrong. But, it is better for these things to go wrong whilst near home rather than on holiday

Hi ALi is the blower motor actualy working or sound very noisy, if its seized or very tight then motor is probably over heating, though fuse should blow assuming correct size fuse is fitted.

Ahhh

Early style fuse box with ceramic fuses is what i have, thanks again Louey.

OK, the one that looks suspect doesn't tally up with my smokey problem.

So is it a whole dasboard off time?? Ohhhh noooooooo!

Hello Mr S, nope, no fan is blowing. Not on 1 setting, 2 or 3.

So you switch the switch to 1,2 or 3 and nothing happens except smoke? no fanning, no noise? Does sound like a wire loose and shorting or the motor is burning out, or maybe something jammed in it?
Is the fuse at the correct rating?

Keep with it Ali, or I shall start on whats happened with mine over the years!

yep

that's right Cate, spot on.

Erm, looked at the thing that Louey posted about the fuses and, erm, which fuse is it!? http://194.242.159.246/brickyard/info/fuses.htm

mines the 12 ceramic one's.

None of them are for the fan, are they?

It certainly doesn't look like it! Maybe thats why its continuing to burn out rather than blowing the fuse, looks like it might be a dashboard out job, sorry. :(

see me?

I'm still smiling.

Ok, dashboard out it is then.

Does wiki have an idiot guide?

I'll report back for duty once dashboard is out.

Stop!

Before you go to the toolbox and hassle of removing the dash......consider the motor and fan may be knackered, try to get hold of another first?
