CENTRAL LOCKING PROBLEM

I recently discovered that my Caravelle has central locking.
It looks like the previous owner had disconnected some wires behind the drivers door. On inspection I noticed that the drivers side mechanism was looking pretty rough, probably explaining why it was disconnected. When reconnected all doors would work except drivers!
No problem I thought, just buy another drivers side mechanism.
The issue now is that all doors lock and open when the key is turned in the passenger side door. (including drivers) But when turning the key in the drivers side it will close all locks if done slowly but not fast (normal speed) & opens only drivers door itself. Ive tried 2 different locking mechanisms now with same results?
Has anyone out there got a clue, all input appreciated..
Many thanks
Dan

Quite odd that the fault persists with two locking motors..
Assuming the system is origional VW.
Each front door motor has 4 wires, a earth, a positive, one that locks the door and one that unlocks.
The way the system works is this.
Turning the key moves the door locking mechinisim as normal but also moves the slider in the locking motor,
As the slider moves it bridges two contacts allowing current to flow to the other locing motors.
Once in motion the contacs under the large cog wheel inside the motor make sure that the motor completes the lock/ unlock cycle.

The sliding door and tailgate motors dont have the sliding contact so cant initiate the lock/ unlock sequence.

I'd start by stripping your drivers motor down, cleaning and probably replacing the small springs as you go.
You can then start to understand the way the motor works.
I'd expect the sliding contact to be the culprit.
