Power steering

Hi folks
Like an idiot I've bought a 'complete power steering rig' of ebay and didn't realise that the connecting rod, which is shorter and different to a standard one, wasn't with it. This rod which connects steering rig to the bottom of the steering column was discontinued in 2007!! A workmate of mine who's an ex syncro owner has said he can make me one up if I give him the exact measurements of the rod. This is where u guys come in! The critical measurement I need is from the groove in the splined end where the securing bolt fixes it into the universal joint on the steering rig, to the top of the rod where it meets the rubber damper. Anybody got a tape measure in there pocket??? Hope so cuz after a trip to croatia this summer with 15" bfg all terrains and no power steering it became apparant what a great invention power steering is!!
Thanks
toastie

Can give you the length of the standard 2wd shaft as Ive got 1 in the garage ready for cutting down to fit the syncro. Could also do with the exact measurement if anyone knows it.

The length of the shaft for the power steering for a Syncro is 582mm. The power steering also uses a universal joint in place of the rubber coupling and this measures approximately 83mm.
Cheers
Ian

No problem. I just replaced the universal joint during my recent rebuild. Pretty pricey at about 150 pounds. If I were doing it again I would look at the possibility of using the rubber coupling instead and adapting the shaft to fit.

Are the steering UJ's metric spline or imperial (more common/universal) ?
There's no need to be paying ZF or VW classic parts money as I may have found a source

A shaft is winging it's way to me by the power of 80-90 and will have imperical metrology rigorously applied with all due haste.

Having just read this one viewtopic.php?f=4&t=82724#p7602854 in syncro, I didn't realize how long this had been hanging around... still no nearer to finding the UJ's other than they are the same as ur-quattro
Spline is a wierd 17.5 mm diameter x 54 serrations of approx 60 degrees form.

I can get the UJ's rebuilt on exchange basis if required, as long as you have the 2wd shaft you are ok as said , cut and shut, they were welded originally so can be welded again afaics
968 has two of them may be the same spline
