Couple of cracking spots on the road from the Kirkstone Pass to Ambleside - fairly hard standing with brilliant views. Don't think they would be particularly sheltered though if the wind was in the wrong direction. Keswick isn't too far from Ambleside but the road from the kirkstone Pass comes down about 4-5 miles on the Keswick side anyway.
There is also a lovely sleepy spot at Patterdale on the old road.
There are one or two spots on the old road round the far side of Thirlmere.
Hope you find somewhere and enjoy it!

Some near Castlerigg and we have camped on the short dead end road to the suspension bridge at portinscale just off the B5289. Only a short 10 minute stroll into Keswick
You can see it on the map just left of the B in B5289

There's a hotel pub over the bridge too in portinscale
