Sourcing / replacing Thermal switch

Hello,
Had a few overheating issues recently. Always when on a long climb in 2nd / 3rd and once in Tehran rush hour (start stopping). The warning light had came on about 4-5 times.
Anyway, when got round to looking into the issue, it would appear the thermal switch wasn't working correctly. The fan is the two speed fan model, but I never noticed the slow speed fan coming on and the roaring beast of a fan only started as the warning light came on, then would go off quite quickly.
As a fix have removed the the wiring to the thermal switch and made a manual switch that can turn the mega fan on.
Questions.
1) Is the thermal switch a standard part, specific to the T25, specific to VW? Are they easy to replace, am in Iran where VWs are non-existant, onto Pakistan and India next. But if is a very specific part will have to orgnise someone to send me the part somehow.
2) Could any serious damage been done by overheating and having the warning light come on a few times?
Cheers
