Can I uprate a 1.6D to a 1.6TD

Hi
I have just bought a camper with a 1.6d engine which is ok but slow and gutless on a slope.
The engine and all ancilliaries were replaced with brand new units just 3years and 12k ago for over £2.5k, therefore all are tip top.
Having read the various AAZ engine threads, my lack of funds and a good engine already I wonder if it is possible to upgrade the 1.6 to a 1.6td?? or are they very different animals?
I know its not much but the extra 15bhp would be nice!!

Of course you can - but im not sure how long it would last.
Don't bother anyhow - your van is never going to be fast is it. Just enjoy the reliabilty and excellent MPG.

Hills will still kill you. You will be disappointed. If you have the money and the inclination then slap an AAZ in.
Still not worth it if your engine is tip top - but if your like me then you will have to do it anyway!

Theoretically a 1.6TD is just a 1.6 D with a turbo stuck on. In practice however the cam is different, so is the pump. But most importantly, the TD als has some internal oil nozzles cooling the pistons from below (and it still gets very hot under the collar). Upgrading a 1.6 D block with turbo and auxillaries will give you a sudden rush of power and an even more sudden broken engine.
FWIW ...I had a 1.6D camper with a little pop-up roof (standing room only) but otherwise fully fitted and pretty heavy as a daily driver for a biblical seven years ...you get used to it. Learn how to best utilise your momentum and otherwise grow a thick skin. You will be rewarded with almost unbelievable frugality (6.5l/100 km no problem) and very little engine worries. (and the glorious views from the head of the queue

What a succinct way to put it, I love the head of the que bit, I always look in the mirror and see the macho agressive one getting really wound up in the go-mobile, always brings a smile to my face, 6.5/100klicks imperial please as you lot are not long since of the propper way and I'll have no more of this metric talk now.
