hi everyone new to all this used to tinker with old moggies years ago but always wanted a vw camper anyway
i have recently bought a 87 westie nice van but the bugger doesnt like starting first time around ,churn it over for long enough and it will fire up drive in to town only a couple of miles starts up fine on the return jerney can missfire every now and then but fine when on a good long run, any ideas would be welcome before i decide to pull the carb apart auto choke so was wondering if that might be the isue ? seams to be drinking the fuel a bit to much awell 60 miles on £20 the misse is going up the wall , boys and there toys , still i love here , the van that is L.O.L

You need to check a few things on your pierburg 2e3
from cold...
remove the pancake shaped duct on your carb by removing the three bolts.
Looking from the top, you should not be able to see down the venturi a flap should partly cover the hole restricting the airflow.

(Your carb is different to this pic but i use it so you can see what the flap should be like.)

Start the engine.
High rpm is quite normal on a cold engine , this is part of the autochoke mechanism

As the engine warms, the flap will slowly move to an upright position i.e. not restricting the air flow.

The mechanism that makes all this happen is attached to the side of the carb with hoses attached to it
inside is a bi metal spring



This spring opens and closes the flap, if it is broken the flap wont work, if the housing it sits in is wrongly adjusted it wont work either.

Now if you accelerate or try to, when cold, the flap should open as you depress the accelerator, this is done by the choke pull down unit (the black plastic unit in fig 2)
if it does not the unit has failed and the engine is overchoking

other things that will cause poor pick up starting and are...
water in the fuel tank
blocked transfer jet
Timing
miss fire due to air leak

Before you start and dissect the carburettor are you 'setting' the choke ?

Check distributor cap (make sure it's clean inside with no build up on terminals) and make sure HT leads to and from coil/distributor and spark plugs are in good condition, still flexible and not cracked.

i havent tried setting the choke but probabley best i check that it isnt broke or breather pipes gunked up?

Press pedal to floor before starting, release then turn key ... that's all there is to setting the choke .... WHY do people insist on stripping carbs down before they learn to do the simples things ???

ok didnt know that one will give it a go have tried simaler throtaling but not as you have described in fact i am going to give it a go now
