Autosleeper thread

Hi my names Kev and I own an Autosleeper :D
mines an 86 VHT just before they called them tridents and troopers.
I would be interested to know from other owners what modifications they have made from the original spec 'sleeper van.

to an MC 2000 (no picture) and there were also zig or battery chargers fitted, pictures and instuctions that we need on here to help folks with out them.

So what ever you have, could you share it, ask it, and if possible answer it.

Kev, got an '86 Trident, had her 3yrs, did a 2,500 mile family euro tour this summer without as much a hiccup. Done plenty of work but no real mods yet. Just had a look at your van, very nice. No offence but how about some silvered indicator bulbs to cure that 'fried egg' effect?
Keep you posted on the mods, plenty planned thru the winter months!

Hi all,

just purchased a '89 Trident which is our first camper (upgrading from tents and trailer tents) and our first Vdub. Just having the family debates about what to call him/her - :roll: but I am more interested in starting the upgrade - not quite a restoration but fair bit of work to do.

Loads of questions which I am searching diligently on the forum (s).

key ones at the moment are:
---anyone got a copy of an '89 Autosleeper manual (one on wiki is early '80's and a fair bit different)
---need to renew all the window seals but can't quite figure out what windows are standard and what ones were AS specific - any suggestions.

Love the interior Kev, photo's on the garage have given us loads of ideas and costs - thanks for the effort to put this on.

First trip will be Volksworld to look at other vans and talk to interior trimmers about costs for recovering all seats/beds etc.

all the side windows behind the cab are AS specific, as AS made there campers from panel vans, or the "camping" chassis.
What's different in your van from this?

Hi Kev, just being nosey and looking at the images of your van there's something wrong with your engine. It's too clean :D . Just an aside, don't want to hijack the thread.

Hi Kev,

key areas I was interested in on the manual were electrics and heating.

Mine hasn't got the leisure battery fitted as far as I can tell (one battery under drivers seat which i assume is the vehicle battery). I need an accurate wiring diagram to be able to retrofit the leisure battery.

Also I have a later electrical control unit, actually the same as the one in the picture on one of your threads, but different to this manual as far as I can see. RCD's took me about 2 hours to find as they are under the bed/seat not on a side panel as they were in '83 apparantly :shock:

I also have a factory fit Propex unit but no instructions which I was hoping would be in the manual - needed becasue when i turn it on it blows the 5A inline fuse from the battery which also seems to control the interior lights, so it all goes rather dark 8)

So if the window seals are AS specific do you need to order from them or do you pull 'em out and match up to something from seals direct?

Also need to do the front door window seals and trims which I guess are a standard VW specialist part.

Thanks for the link, will be looking into this - also didn't realise you had covered the cabinets- looks really good, was it like "sticky back plastic" stuff?

Looking at the diagram I see no fuse linking both propex and lights, so I can only assume the PO has been fiddling with the fuses.
My propex is on a 7 amp fuse

Brickwerks sell the cab window trim.
But I got mine from vanfest (Gunzl) where you can get this sort of stuff very cheap, and very good quality

I will investigate further on the Propex, see if I can find a user manual for one - I am guessing the "hot box" referred to on the wiring diagram is the Propex?

The van has a towbar with split charge so I will need to figure out how to rig the leisure battery alongside or whether I can infact just tap into the charging feed from the towbar

Thanks for the help, I will try and get some pictures up in the "garage" and start to log the work like you have done as I found that really helpful.

The tow bar electrics should not be split charged.
they should be plugged into the junction box on the engine bulkhead (black box next to the ECU) lift up the lid and relay No1 is housed inside

In most sleepers..Aux battery is safely housed as you say under the passenger seat. the split relay is secured in the engine bay (some are under the drivers seat)
Can you tell me where the relay for the tow bar is... (I bet it's near to the alternator where the bleed hose runs) if it is that's an AS relay for your Aux batt

The controller is the same as mine. The actual propex unit should have the model marked on it - red is 1600W and I think the blue is 2000W
