Eber info

Hi, my new westy's got an eber. Original underslung one, now i'm only planning on using it a couple of times before i break the bus up. I was wondering how safe they are? By that i mean will lack of servicing effect safety, is combustion chamber completely seperate from the warm air?
Or is seperated by gaskets that could deteriate ?
I've had it running, quite a lot of white smoke at the start which disapeared after a few mins, Some of this smoke ended up inside the van, but wasn't coming from the warm air outlet, think it just made it's way into the van, as it was parked up next to a wall.
Do they have a cut off for fumes? Do people leave them on overnight?
