water cooled engine worry

hey, Iv recently bought a 1.9 watercooled transporter, or 'orter' as it says on the back...anyway im planning a trip around europe this summer and was wondering if there is any advice for dealing with my watercooled engine as Iv heard they may not be as reliable as Aircooled? also, is there anything that goes with the water in the coolant system?

Do you know the mileage any history with it i am thinking of doing the same but i need to do some long runs in mine to gain confidence in it even thuogh i have loads of history with mine and the last owner did trips to the south of france every year

ye! its done 92000, it drove back from london to east midlands with no problems at all...im the same though, iv began taking it for daily runs just to get my confidence up...recently i had a problem with it not firing but then an aa man pointed out halfords had given me the wrong HT leads so...mine has also been to greece and back in the last 2 years and owned by the paul o grady show apparently who spent a lot on it! Im optimistic though, we're planning on getting to Leon in Spain and the aa man said it was firing fine and dandy!

You will need antifreeze in the cooling water, about 5050, keeps it good inside too. check out the wiki for types of antifreeze thats good for these engine, not just Halfwits muck!

If you arent that mechaniclly (spelling) minded then its worth finding someone who knows their way around these buses where are you in this green and pleasant land

we took ours to Poland for its first trip!
I had a bit of trouble which appeared to be fuel starvation. Last year a water pipe split that couldn't be sorted locally but we were (after a bit of an argument) brought home by the RAC. That makes it sound unreliable but its more tempremental.
The main thing is that vehicles of this era are fixable. Any mechanic (over a certain age) will be able to get you going again on most faults. Unlike the Smart we hired this year. It just decided it didn't want to go right now. 20 minutes later, tried again and it worked.

If you really are worried breakdown assistance can help you.
Just get a good service in now, and as Cate says get new antifreeze in there if you don't know its history and get out there and use it.
