Gear selector

Ok I've got a kinda harsh 5 speed box, it's usable but I would like it better, I've regreased the box behind the spare wheel making it slightly better but ways the next step to make it as good as new are dam near ! Can any bits be replaced and would it make any substantial difference ? Cheers

Have you done an oil change on the box itself? You could also check the selecter rod where the linkage joins to the gearbox. Make sure that's all well greased and moving freely.

My five speed is the same, getting into reverse is a particular pleasure! Anyone else experience this?

Linkages were looked at recently which helped a bit.

not gone as far as gear box oil change, will do that tho(hopefully) when i get it stripped over winter. ill lube it all over too ! must say i aint looked at the bit that goes into the box so thanks for the tip :ok

Hi, You may want to check that the gear linkage hasn't been set up incorrectly or has moved out of position. Haynes manual section 7A.4 gives full details of how to do this. I had a really poor 4-speed box shift, so followed the info and it all came good.

You may also want to check the free play between the clutch Master cylinder and the pushrod from the clutch pedal. The fork at the top of the pushrod can wear, and causes the pedal to not fully depress the clutch, so gear shifting can be a drag. You could also have a look around the bellows on the clutch slave cylinder pushrod for any traces of clutch fluid. It would indicate a worn seal on the slave cylinder, which would give you a problem if the clutch isn't clearing when you depress the clutch pedal. These are things I've found on my van and once sorted, made a difference.

re : change the oil - first thing you should do when you buy the van, change all fluids unless there is documented proof that they have been done recently, then you have a known base level to work from

re the linkage the 5 speed isn't a great design, the bottom of the stick and the guides in the box underneath it are overly complicated and suceptible to damage and wear which is why the shift becomes progressively worse.

I'm looking at getting a repair kit made for the nylon guides and hopefully the guides will become available again from classic shortly
