noisy start up

my mates caravelle t25 makes a horrible noise from the engine when left for a couple of weeks,the noise goes after about a 2mile drive
i think its some thing to do with the oil but i dont know ?
its a 1.9 dg and works fine if started every week just need to know so( i can help him out ) :ok

When you say noise, do you mean rattle? If so just sounds like tappet rattle. Just the tappets draining down....

like a cam rattle i wondered if the oil wasnt being pushed around fast enough

This is very common and nothing to worry about.
The tappets are hydrolic meaning that they use oil pressure to maintain the correct gap and to take up any slack, when the engine hasn't been used for a while the oil drains out of them causing the horrendous noise :? after a few miles the noise goes away when the oil has been pumped back in.

Old oil can make the problem much worse, so if it hasn't been changed in the last year then defiantly change it. 8)

Dont bother with expensive synthetic type stuff, cheap mineral grade is fine, look in the wiki for correct spec, really thin multi grade tends to find its way out of every gasket and onto your drive, making the wife less than happy..... :roll:

Its the same scenario where people only use them for a three mile run to work. It doesn't give the tappets long enough to pressurise. Like all v-dubs though, they do like to be used.
