Tappet shim check and adjustment is part of a standard 12,000 service, I take it you do the servicing yourself otherwise your garage should have already done them?

I have the tools but I'm in Nottingham, Simon at Brickwerks is the only other person I know for sure has the tools.
Take 20-30 minutes, checked hot and you need a replacement cam cover gasket/end seals.

Tappets set tollerance:
Inlet 0.2 - 0.3mm (0.25mm)
Exhaust 0.4 - 0.5 (0.45mm)

Sorry Elvis....you just wanted a simple answer....I'm sure there must be someone in your area.

The obvious of course would be your main VW dealer....ring and get a quote, book time plus parts, it might not be as expensive as you think.
Half hour labour...plus parts something like that.

I've heard good things about AJ's VW in Paignton, never used them myself though.

Good luck

Just buy the tools, we have them on the webshop.
It's not hard to do.
We also have the spare shims on the shop too as well as the rocker cover gasket you'll need to put it back together.
They are always "tight"
If you measure the gaps, take the shims out and measure them sometimes a bit of swapping about leaves you with only a couple of shims to buy.
much easier if you have a load of shims though (as we do) and just do one by one.
We have loads of second hand ones, if we can we re-use those but if we have to break into new packets from the stores we charge for those but it's very rare.
If the van is in the workshop and on the ramp it only usually takes an hour start to finish and they run a million times better when done.

I was wondering if Futbus in/near Newton Abbot has the tools to do this job. He does all sorts of work on T25s.

Take a look at :- http://www.futbus.com
