Hello
I'm trying to decide whether to buy a particular T25 1.6TDI van or not. Could anyone here help me with the following:

The van is a 1990 G Plate

1. What is the 1.6TDI engine like? I've been told they're a bit slow.

2. Is £2000 a fair price for a semi converted panel van?

Good price, yes

The engine won't be a TDI but a TD engine, Indirect Injection TD. In good consition these are good engines, and can go quite well. Conversely they have a reputation for getting tired, and having a limited life with the added complexity of the turbo installation.

That said, some poeple love them and can give a good account of themselves... if its goes poof (like any engien can, even 1.9 and 2.1 WBX's do) then most would replace it with the VW 1.9TD engine - a good example of which is a very capable and lusty powerplant. Not a direct drop-in though, but plenty of knwoeldge on c80-90..

If it starts well from cold, only smokes a bit on startup, and then is clean, pulls well then well worth considering... just don't overload the van and then cane it up long inclines into wind on motorways - given a chance, oil changed regularly and set to the correct level (sortof critical), then they have given many years of good service.
