Hi there ive got a 1.9 dg T25 and its having trouble turning over when i try too start it.I have been told that the starter motor bush which sits in the gearbox has dropped...Can i do this myself as ive been told it needs to go on a ramp to be done....

It doesn't need to be put on a ramp to do this job, it's just maybe easier!
Remove starter motor (2 bolts), and if you look inside where the motor was you will see a small hole right at the end (about 6 inches in). In this hole is where the bush sits, which will need to be removed (the bush... Not the hole!) and the new one pushed into place. The new one must be either soaked in engine oil overnight or filled with oil and squeezed by finder and thumb until oil squidged out the sides of the bush.
Removing the old one can be a pain if it is stuck in there but can be done with an easy-out tool or a threaded bar/bolt the correct size.
Remember to disconnect the battery before you start though, it has a permanent feed to the starter motor.

i use a tap to remove. just screw the tap in to the bush and the bush just screws out.

Cheers lads... so can i undo and remove the motor from the top of the engine or will i need to get underneath and jack it up???

Depends on your waistline

With a nice piece of corrugated card you should be able to slide underneath and remove the starter bolts easily enough.

If it's your first time

You will need someone to help holding a 17 mm spanner on the end in the engine compartment. The long one is easy as it is a 'D' head.

Tip 1) Pressure wash the underside and gearbox first

Tip 2) Use a touch of fine valve grinding paste and run the nuts back and forth on the bolts. Clean with paraffin. They will now spin on till finger tight, avoiding a lot of spannering,.

but if you get underneath remember to use the axle stand, and chock the wheels

(excuse the hijack) - I have the same symptoms, especially when cold. I plan to change this bush and also the brush pack in the starter motor.
Does anyone have the part numbers needed please?

Bush usually comes with the refurbed motor
I think I have one though

Also does anyone know if i can just replace the brush's in the starter motor if so where can i buy them

vw still sell them, but you should be able to get them from any bosch dealer or your local alternator/starter repair place - I'd get them to refurb it properly - the failure point generally is the contacts inside the solenoid cap, which requires special tool to remove and refit and our cap has a long stud, which is available, but a lot of refurbers won't have it in stock - insist they use the correct one otherwise you'll have to modify the alternator connection on the loom

Right lads thanks for all your help gonna attempt changing the bush this weekend...Just one more thing,,,When i undo the starter motor from the engine Will the bush comeout with the starter motor or does it get left in the engine.....
