Hi

The starter motor has packed up on my van. Could somebody tell me where it is as not been able to locate it looking from the top of the engine bay.

right at the top of the gear box. fitted in from the front, ie exits the bell housing toward the front of the van.

I've seen a cyllnder about 4 inches in diameter and length, just below the gearbox, with a half inch braided wire connecting from the centre to the van. Is that it?

Nope.....that's the front gearbox mount, if I'm not mistaken.

As Lee says its on top. Take off the engine cover. The starter is at REAR of the gearbox, FRONT of the engine, on top. Has a big fat plastic covered wire going to it. It's a b**ch to get off, cos the clutch slave cylinder bracket is in the way. I usually undo the slave cylinder from the bracket, and remove the brace to the gearbox, then rotate the bracket out of the way. Easy once all the bolts are free.

It would be just as well to thoroughly check the electrical connections to the starter before removing it, just in case that's the problem.

Thanks Colinthefox. I have now found it! Will check out the wires in daylight

Fully loaded cali. I would take it to the garage but the chap I normally use is on holiday!
