Rocky Mountain Westy Plate Bumpers

Hi
I don't know if anyone else other than syncropaddy is following this thread on the TheSamba
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewto ... er&start=0
I'm watching with interest as they look like 'proper' bumpers and Mik'e taking on board additions/modifications and criticisms as he goes along.
It's 10 pages long but worth a read to get the idea, see how it's developing and especially the end bit where he does some impromptu Field Testing !

I agree with paddy about those bolt on eyelets, an easy way to sort it would be to have cut a slot for the eye and mount them from the inside. tidy like.

I dont agree with adding needless weight on an already heavy machine though( well mine anyway)

A few posts had to be removed and the thread cleaned up as I took quite a bit of stick over my views. Americans dont like foreigners criticizing them, especially in public! The design is badly flawed in its execution, adds weight and makes a joke of approach angles! I have offered a much simpler idea for the mount/recovery point but so far no take up.

Hanging a T25 out of a front loader is a nice bit of PR but only proves you can hang a T25 from 2 tow hooks. Trying to stretch a T25 between two vehicles also proves very little. Still no sign of a single hook snatch test ........ any volunteers? Maybe we should get some of those lovely Norwegian nutters we saw at Syncro25 to do a Norwegian style recovery!!

Hardly surprising really after comments like this:

Im also an engineer and I cannot believe how someone could manufacture something as dangerous as those recovery eyes! How stupid can you be to even think that 4 little stainless allen screws would be adequate to tow a vehicle? This design is an accident waiting to happen!

Thought Ten Cent Life summed it up rather well though:

i like the look of that type of bumper but they will compromise the van i many ways. lowering the bumper line is daft i think.

Look, the Septics (all right, some of them anyway) think that Creationism is an acceptable alternative scientific theory to Evolution.

Just let them keep on taking their genes out of circulation by allowing them to try out dumb ideas...

Hear hear, as it happens one of my favourite quotes is:

"When we protect the stupid from killing themsleves, we lose the edge in evolution where only the smart survive"

My fav quotes on this type of subject are

"you can make some thing idiot proof, but then they make a better idiot"

or

"never argue with an idiot because they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience"

Great thread. Good comments there syncropaddy!

John Wessel's last post of the impact strip/bumper/frame rail mod is interesting.

That would surely be a superior basis for any winch/bullbar/bumper/tow hitch setup and if you could move the front skin back a touch and improve the clearance?

Yes it gets interesting at the very end and I like the idea of the 'keyhole surgery' approach to the front. I think with some careful thought a lot of useful ideas could bear fruition in that area.

Definitely. I'm holding off any more front bumper/bullbar ideas and work till I have investigated it further.

I believe Syncronutz have fitted the LT towing eye (pin arrangement) before in the impact strip area and I have one chopped out should it be deemed practical.

Ive been searching for one of those (LT towing eye) for exactly the same purpose. Let me know if you want to get rid of it!

good to see you've been keeping yourself busy andrew, you've obviously missed your calling

U.S.-IRISH RELATIONS
U.S. relations with Ireland have long been based on common ancestral ties and shared values. Besides regular dialogue on political and economic issues, the U.S. and Irish Governments have official exchanges in areas such as medical research and education.

With Ireland's membership in the European Union, discussions of EU trade and economic policies as well as other aspects of EU policy have also become key elements in the U.S.-Irish relationship. In recent years, Ireland has attempted to act as a diplomatic bridge between the United States and European Union. During its 2004 EU presidency, Ireland worked to strengthen U.S.-EU ties that had been strained by the Iraq war.

That ladder wouldn't last 2 minutes over here [on the orange kombi], But I think that's the point.
Most of the UK owners use their syncro for green laning, and most of our/your off road experience comes from that.
Theres' now way you would use those parts in the UK as they just aren't fit but I should imagine some of the terrain that they utilise in the US is different.
The bumpers look lovely yes, and if you don't off road they are a great idea, but for the UK, no.
