Just done an oil change and have stripped a bit of the sump thread. What can be done to rectify this? Its leaking oil. I feel the urge to tighten the nut a bit more but am worried that it will make it worse?

I assume the whole sump will need replacing? Is this a costly procedure?

… by the way I hadnt even got the nut half way in before I new something was wrong. I am alway mindful of not over-tightening the sump nut

Can't you tap the thread and use a slightly larger bolt?

is that standard procedure ?

without the threads it's an M15 hole you'll need an M16 tap and a Renault sump plug

Its a real bummer cos the I flushed out the engine and put new oil in and the engine sounds lovely. I was so careful to avoid cross threading or over tightening. Really annoyed with myself.

hey we all make mistakes..
if you have cross threaded you might just get away with a copper crush washer and some PTFE plumbers tape

I avoided cross threading. The problems started when I went to put the sump nut (with new washer) back in after draining the old oil. The nut went in ok and felt ok, then it went loose. It was only halfway in at that point. I knew instantly what the problem was. I undid the nut to find some shredded metal from the sump thread. I carried on with the oil change then took it for a spin to get the oil hot (and thin) to see if there was enough of a seal. Unfortunately the oil drips out.

I wonder if its possible that a bit of crud from the draining oil could have got in the threads which caused the damage?

I should drain the oil and get a lamp to look at the damage.. it may not extend the legnth of the hole.

if it's not, then like I say, get a crush washer which is different to the one you bought. and finger tight then 1/4 turn

Mine's gone to sht too. Did it back up with no effort and it just started turning over and over when fully in, now the odd drip comes out.

I've not replaced the washer but it turns infinately. Is it an M16 renault plug for the 1.6 TD JX then? And how do I know I'm getting the right tap for the renault thread?

OK treat this with the contempt it deserves but it might "get you home" 'til its fixed proper...

I can get home and about fine. It's only the odd drip. But I think I'm going to need to tap and fit a larger plug.

im baffled as to why they are so crap. Un-did, re-fitted with very little force, cross threaded. Is it due to there being so much lubrication or something?
