Another body (with a bit lacking)

Well it seems Im a magnet for missing bits and am proud to announce that another body has found its way to me,
Not too severe, a few minor items is all but the owner complained that during the recent hot ( ) spell whilst on their hols it got hot in the van and they had no opening window at the rear?
I beg to differ

Bit closer look

All they had to do was poke a bit of fallen branch in there....
Anyhow a few moments later and the window about drops out..

leaving a nasty little bit of nothingness and rust.

Now I could remake this lot but the time involved and the fact that the cover location is not that secure to the nothingness is just cause to fit this..
Well not all of it, thankfully after viewing it was decided to obtain the aforesaid panal and this was procured from a local source, so will chop the rot out and then undo this panal and let it in.

Hmm, tidying, not sure I do cosmetic, prefere a proper dig with good sharp objects till the point of no return is achieved..

so is the plan to stick that in and hopefully the lack of window will stop the sun warming the van up so much next year

Well I think I will cut a hole init to fit the window, though it might be an idea to leave it solid and maybe locate an opener and then cut a hole to suit?could go nautical and fit a porthole window, brass one maybe.mike

Well, back to it after 4-5 days up near whitby.
cut out the majority of the rust
and this is what the pillar looks like (in good order too)
I lifted the slider off to give access to bits and found the lock loose on the door, looks like a previouse owner had tried to tighten it with door on as screws were a bit mangled

all secure now, you can see the overspray on the rubber and they even left the slider cover on as there is dry overspray under it, lazy sods.

The folding which holds the slider cover was manky as they often are and a real source of a lot of the rust in this area so I decided to remove it and make good
using this

which is ideal for this type of weld. Once I had drilled them all out and removed the item this is whats behind
and this

It is only surface rust and I can get rid of it, this is the other side of same panal
Now loosely held in place to check which bits need a bit more trimming then a good sand back to metal treat it and weld back

Nice little Sunday job

Well a happy sunday morning, spent an hour and half adjusting and such so all the folds line up and thats about it, welding

the panal came from an early van so a bit different behind the end of slider guide

just had to reshape it a bit, its not seen so not really a problem.
This is the top of the frame just under the roof showing the welds as sanded off

This is the inside of same panal behind slider rail

Have vactanned this from the inside as the rest, will apply some seam sealer tommorow

The sliding door has been on and off the runner dozens of times but its an easy one personage ! job lift swing out and onto an axle stand
So tommorow will sand down the outside getting rid of surplus vactan , reweld the channel for the side cover then etch and undercoat and job done.

Well got a bit waylayed but seam sealed the inside of the bottom seam

as this is where condensation will run and whilst I cant stop it I would rather it go down to the archtop (waxoyled)then into this seam and satrt the whole process of again.
welded the cover securing strip back on and seam sealed all other joins/welds prior to self etch followed by Glasurit primer/filler 2 coats of
Gassed the front edge join as I wanted it to be seamlees to the eye.
Slider hooked back om and ready for glass back in.
