my split relay on my 1.6d has blown and iv'e been looking at the wireing diagrams on wiki and mine isn't like any of them.this is how mines wired up. thin red wire from relay to alternator,thin brown to body, thin red and blue to liesure battery, and medium red to starter battery. now from my starter battery i have 4 wires,thick black cable from - to alternator,thick red cable from + to alternator,thick red from + to a fuse box in engine bay,and finally thick black cable that disapears somewhere under the vehical.i have had the van about 3 months and it all worked ok for a month or so.im'e hopeing i can just buy a new relay but with the wierd wireing i thought i would ask you guys first.

Well, if it were me I'd follow the diagram links in the WIKI, wire like that, and make sure that cables are man enough where they need to be. Sounds as if they used non standard colours - hence the confusion. The connections are straightforward though.

thin charge wires mean fire hazard.
there should be a thick (at least 5mm thick copper core) wire from the relay to the batt and from the relay to the alt
the thin wires are the trigger wire and earth for the trigger

the relay MUST have two big spade connectors and be at least 50Amp capable, for your Aux batt power, with a thumping gert big fuse.

Thanks for your answers but i now have another question,
I have seen a number of kits on ebay that only have two wires to the relay i.e wire from starter battery positive through relay and on to liesure battery positive with a fuse either side of the relay.
just wondered if anyone out there had any experiance/opinion of these.sorry if question seems a bit basic but i don't want to spend my money on rubbish.

Probably an 'intellegent' voltage sensing relay. Do a search along the lines of that and you'll see there's been several threads about them.

keep it simple... look in at Maplin electronics or any car/caravan accessory shop, cheaper too
and you can take it back if it does not work.
