After having my stereo removed by some local thieving %#@$ bags I decided to have a look down the whole that had been left and discovered this plug thigy with cables.
Image
it was right down the bottom almost on the floor behind the front dash panel in the centre. looks like the cables are coming from the steering wheel but was really dificult to trace exactly as there are so many other wires around this area.Image
there are two brown and grey ones, two blue and grey ones and one red one. couldnt find the other end of this plug socket thing so am a bit baffled
anyone have any ideas?

Hello!

No expert but I am guessing it is what plugs in the back of the stereo..... brown wires are earths, red is permanent live and blue/grey is live only when the ignition is turned on - that's unless someone has faffed with the wiring..... I am guessing that's what's needed to power the stereo. A while since I been into my wiring so I maybe wrong. Maybe another one somewhere with the speaker connections and they both go into the back of the stereo or into a converter then into the stereo, depending on the type of stereo connection. Again, working from memory so could be totally wrong!

Hope that offers some help!

Tom.

Hi again,

Had a feeling you were going to say that! Brings back memories of the electrical nightmares I had after removing my dash earlier in the year....well not nightmares really, just needed to identify what I hadn't put back/had fallen off

Right - I'm still on the radio idea....in the Haynes manual page 12-31 you have the ORIGINAL wiring (which is probably nothing like what you have now after many years of people adding and removing stereos/iPods/hairdryers or whatever ). This has a four terminal connector with two grey/blue wires and red and two brown wires (maybe only one as one goes to the 'Reading Lamp, front passenger' - don't know if they all had them). So, my new guess is that is it the original 'radio' attachment (before tape/CD/iPod) and maybe has been long since discarded/lost. I imagine that when someone connected a newer stereo they jumped the leads from somewhere else.... because they didn't know it was there (maybe a radio was an expensive option in those days and so the wires have been where you found them for years!!).

Don't think its for the alarm as wires follow the original wiring colours and I assume the alarm was fitted later???

After removing the dash I removed 20 years of radio bodge wiring and found that the wiring diagrams are accurate and that it is not as complicated as it may seem!!!

Anyway, if that's not the answer good luck!!

Tom.

Does sound feasible I guess...who knows what has gone on in 25years of camping and tinkering certainly wasnt the original stereo when I got the van so I expect this cable was lost along with the original stereo. thanks for the input

window went in great thanks! managed to get it in without removing the seals or other glass by dropping the dividing bar into the door then raising it up once fitted worked well and saved me removing my dodgy seals! thanks again for the glass and advice...I'll sleep better tonight without my cardboard window!

think i'll tuck the old stereo connector back into the dash and use my loose wiring so I can keep my battery switch over switch... preserved like a time capsule in the depths of the dash
