Have just come back to my van after it was sitting outside for 3 weeks. It is turning over fine so its not the battery, changed all the HT leads and the distributer cap and tested for spark which there was (got a huge shock off it!) and there is petrol in the tank!
Any suggestions what it could be? Im confused.

Is the petrol getting through? water in the pipe? pump not working?

I had a similar problem with my van. Though she is powered by a 2 litre ford pinto, the principles remain the same. I dont know if you have the old type points in there but this is what i changed on my baby. In this order too mate.
Plugs, leads, coil, dizzy cap, rotor arm, points and the condenser.
She fires up ok now, just the timing is out slightly form where i changed the dizzy and points. But this is easily rectified, im just waiting for a timing light to tweek her.

Thanks guys, have taken the petrol pipe into the carb and there is no petrol being pumped through. i guess this is the problem. so the pump maybe? does anyone know where this is?

Follow the pipe back and the first thing you come to is the pump ....two bolts and it's off...JK will mail you one or Jokerdub has them

silver capped bit nearest you, next to the dizzy. Remember to remember which pipe is in and which is out!

Found the pump! turned the engine over whilst holding this pipe and nothing is coming off. does this pump run on pressure as there is no electrics going through? could it have lost pressure? if so how could it be re pressurised or is it jst a case of buying another pump!

Its a simple mechanical pump no electrics, doesn't need to be primed or pressurised.

I took one pipe off at a time from the pump and placed my finger on the input and outputs to test for suction whilst the engine was turning over and there was a slight suction and slight blowing from the output but how strong should this be? it didnt seem strong enough to suck all the way from the petrol tank...is this a dodgy pump?

With mine i reversed it out of the garage and while i was locking the doors it cut out and would'nt start again checked for spark all ok new pump sorted if you don't know the history or your van has done loads pf miles might be worth replacing anyhow these pumps can either fail gradually or go all of a sudden

My father's van's petrol pump died gradually just recently, easily replaced.

Be very carefull before you do this but
When I suspect fuel starvation I use a very small amount of "easy start" put directly into the mouth of the carb. Here is how, remove the top of the carb (plastic bit) and put a 2 second spray in then replace the top at this point go to the front and try and start the thing, if all is well the engine will briefly fire. I like this way because it simply lets you now the electrics are fine and the problem is fuel linked. Another option some people use is to pour petrol down the carb whilst someone turns it over.DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU DO AND YOU GET A BACKFIRE YOU WILL GET A FIREBALL IN YOUR FACE AND IN THE INTERIOR OF YOUR T25

Dont condem your pump yet, it could be a fuel line problem, get a can, and pipe the pump from it, a shorter run, no filter........
