a boring question about cylinder head studs

posted a thread on the just kampers site(posted it wen this site was down),about changing the cylinder head studs on a wasserboxer and sum of the replies i got back sed not to bother as i would have to rework the crankcase?anyone know if this is true.i thought it would just be a case of removing old and putting in new

What engine is it? DG, DJ, DF, MV, SS or what?
Strength of studs seems to vary with engine and also the type of coolant that has been used over the years.

dh, its a dg 1.9 1989 with 58.000 on clock,
dont know how often coolant`s bin changed.i changed it in june and some rust came out with the old stuff,is it best just to leave well alone if its runnin ok,i was thinkin of changin em cos i dont want em to go wen im abroad or owt like that

Yes you can do it, i did mine on both sides, you do not have to re-work the block or use heli-coils or any such like. It does take time but the way i did it delivered a 100% success rate and i have never had any problems my van is running on a dg wasserboxer i did it two years ago and in this time i have completed two continental family holidays.
