hi all.
i spent most of this morning trying to replace a spark plug, got the old one out no prob. took nearly an hour fitting the new one through the hole in the tinware. was scared of cross threading it as i have read on here its easy to do and a hell of a job to put right. any tips on how to line the plugs up with the hole in the head please. got another 3 to do and dont have a spare week to faff about doing it. many thanks . john.

put plug in plug socket and twist. if your only doing it by hand then you can't cross thread it. So it up hand tight then just nip it up with the ratchet.

The only time I;ve had an issue was when the tinware was out of place, but apart from that it should be quite simple,

If it feels tight then something isn't right

thamks a kirk. that was the problem i had, kept feeling lik it was cross threaded. i just could not get the angle right. maybe the tinware is out of line or maybe its just me being "cock" handed. i will try another one in the morning and see how it goes, thanks. john

Get a bit of rubber hose, slide the plug in the end then twist the hose to start plug without crossing it Used in the trade for years

Seconded - I keep a length of old vacuum hose in the toolbox for just this reason. Top tip.

Hi John". I used to have this problem when mine was an Air-Cold, you are always a little bit edgy as its very easy to cross thread if you dont have the special tool for the Aircooled plug fitment,
The easy way to get round this is to cut a length of hosepipe rubber/plastic tubing and with a little help of some hot water imerse the pipe end in the hot water then shove it onto the end of the plug, then you have more contact feel of the plug when inserting it into the thread. -----------------

Yep the piece of rubber pipe is the best way. It gives a lot more "feel" than using a socket and a bit more room when going in through the tinware.

If it all goes horribly wrong and the plug does start to cross-thread there is still hope. Get an old spark plug and saw cut four equally spaced slots into the threaded end to make a sort of tap, and use it to carefully re-cut the lead on the thread.

It does work, just don't ask how I know.

Or you can get an old plug and cut groves into it and hey presto you have a thread restorer!
