Spare Wheel Carrier

Whilst camping this weekend I saw a defender with a swing away spare wheel carrier, after a close inspection I thought it could be worked to fit the Syncro. This link is the nearest I can find to the one I saw, has anyone used these or do you have any comments on whether this is doable?[http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/SERIES/ ... rrier.html]

Cheers,

Nigel M

Any things possible, main consideration is that the top mount needs to fit in the belt line and the lower mount needs to clear the bumper, you also need to consider the body reinforcement. Most syncro carriers also have a lower lock that helps take the weight.

if its a cheap fix you looking for just get a pulchen rear rack and strap the wheel to it. i used this method for a while and had no problems. in fact it has certain advantages and disadvantages.

if you want to go specificly for a swing out id save and buy one of the syncronutz ones. otherwise you`ll end up with wheel carrier envy......

SA bumper mounted spare carrier is the fido's plums IMHO
Shorten the hinge arms, then you can have two spares

I have a genuine VW one on my Syncro and jebiga41 says its much better that his Ortec one.

I also have a genuine VW one in my shed .......

The Syncronutz one is purpose made for a Syncro and whilst the LR one is beefy enough Id say there would be a good bit of work to get it right

Mine will be at the left side, closet (wardrobe) is at this side so already limited sight on the left...

I think the easiest way to duplicate one is this type from the german army...

I'm sure there's more interest here. Good to kick the ideas about.

Thats an Ortec one. Jager sells them.

Swinging to the left and right means different things here in Ireland!!

I have an Ortec one on the RHS but would fit one each side if I could find another at a reasonable price. Mine has a 16@x8J Penta on and copes well with the weight - I've even stood on it to access the roof and it just doesn't budge. They're better engineered than they look but I still feel they could be improved upon (ability to slip on different wheel widths and adapt for water carrier/hi-lift jack, ladder fitment etc)

As for the SA bumper ones silverbullet posted . Never seen one without the bumper shell over it so I guess it uses the bumper arm mounts or a custom towbar arrangement for strength. I'd buy a pair if they were reasonably priced.

Having owned a Landrover S2A with a Paddocks Wheel carrier fitted I can safely say that they are not the best quality (unless they have changed) and the plastic coating comes off after a year or so.

Best go with the bespoke Syncro wheel carrier.
