when turning from left to right and right to left I get a clunk as it passes over straight. I have had a look but can't see anything obvious. Everything is done up tight. Any ideas please?

Also when driving on gravel tracks etc the steering feels and sounds loose and rattles. I presume this is down to the bushes?

I would say it is the bushes. My steering used to rattle loudly whenever I went over cobbles or those severe rumble strips you sometimes get when entering supermarket or B&Q car parks

Get the steering column bushes from JK (out of stock) and check the state of the coupling square at the base of the column beneath the rubber shroud . get that from brickwerks

I checked the bushes from your video and they looked fine. Also there doesn't seem to be any play the squares.

What about the two squares under the van?

I removed the rubber couplings tonight, they look okay but I'm going to change them anyway. Mine are riveted, do I just drill then out and bolt new ones in place?

Also what are the Justkampers ones like as they are half the price of Brickwerks?

I have a RHD panel van with excellent steering, is the steering box the same as a LHD. I would have a look but it's dark.

Don't scrimp on your steering. Anyway JK's aren't the right coupings (no surprise there) as if you look closely they are listed under "Beetles".

TBH if I was you I would wait until JK get the steering column bushes back in stock and change them too even if the don't look like they need changing 25 years of use will have made them oval

I think I'm going to go through all the bushes etc.

Any idea where else I can try for the column bushes? Tried Vw and GSF?

Sadly no. No stock at VWheritage's mark up either. Most likely the previous topic wiped out JK's stock

Have you rang JK to ask when they will be getting stock...if ever?

They are 2.02 euros from classic parts but obviously there is postage on top (803419775B)

Try a wanted ad to see if anyone will add them to an order they are making from classicparts. Worth a try

JK sites says the steering column bushes are on back order. They are taking orders and will fulfill them when stock arrives

A clunk in the steering could be wear in the ball joints, track rod ends or rack. The chatter over cobbles etc could also be the upper wishbone bushes.
