What gearbox for an AAZ

Sorry - an old topic but going round in circles a bit..

I have an 1.9TD AAZ converted from a 1.7D and the 5 speed gearbox is on it's way out. A 5sp box code 3H from a 1.6TD has popped up - anyone know if this will fit and what the gearing will be like?

If not suitable - what's the best 5 speed box to look for?

Thanks..

Not sure if this will help, I punched in something like 't3 gearbox codes 'into google and found some tables showing all the boxes and gear ratios etc.

The box from the jx 1.6td engine should be perfect for your AAZ, but Aidans the expert round here on gearboxes , no doubt he'll be around soon or PM him.

what he said, 3H will be an improvement on what you have, better final drive, less revs per mile, better fuel economy; could maybe consider a slight change to 5th when you get it rebuilt
whatever you do with a five speed drain the oil, examine the plug, stand on bellhousing and remove the end case, be aware of thrust washer on first gear and on reverse idler which can stick to end case and then fall on floor when you're not looking. apart from either of them nowt else should fall out, if it does walk away, no seriously, lift off first gear from end of pinion shaft and check the bearing is intact, no damage to shaft and the face of first gear and of the synchroniser inner hub haven't worn into each other, check end case bearings are intact, and pull on end of pinion shaft to see if there's anything other than rotational movement, ie no play side to side or up and down, if there is pinion bearing is worn, not good, first gear will fail soon and get very expensive and it'll probably whine abit in use. If all good reassembly is the reverse as they say , new gasket a quid from VW 091 311 215 A, important, don't just use flange sealant, gasket is part of the calculated length of the case.
fresh oil, 4 litres, GL4 and every three years 20 k miles max, enjoy
