A set of alloys, should I or shouldnt I?

Not really a masive fan of them on a Syncro but after some messing around today I stumbled on somthing quite interesting.

I have been having a route in my shed and found some spacers I had made up a few years ago so I could fit some 17" Mark 4 golf gti wheels on a 2wd T3. I wasnt always that happy with them because the front ones wouldnt clear the greese hub so that had to be removed and the speedo cable had to be wedged in the plastic cap, and I just filled the alloy hub areas with greese and poped the cap back on.
Anyway... I just offered them up to my Syncro and because Syncros dont have a front greese hub they fit right on a good un, mmmmmm I thought....

Because of the size of the spacer they bring the back of the tyre 3/4" further out than a mefro does so their is tons of clearance on the rear trailing arm.

Ignore the low profile tyres for now please but I think thee might look quite good with some nice tyres on. They are quite substatial and the silver bits you can see are a raised bit on a much thicker grey part of wheel. I have seen a really cheap set of new (1000 miles) 225 55 17 van rated tyres too for sale so I might just go with these as its only costing a few quid. Or might hang out for some deeper walled tyres.

What do you recon? Might look ok on the doka because the MT tyres on it at the moment are giving me head ache after driving the super smooth Westy for so long now.

er, well gay

I know golfs have got heavy but are they really strong enough ? With all your work stuff in and the canopy the doka's not light and with the spacers more load on the wheel bearings

Having driven a few syncros on 225/55-17 (Audi Allroad wheels), I can vouch for them. You will get a more stable and "modern" driving feel. WIth all the softroaders on the market today (Rav4, Outlander, etc) there are plenty of good tires to choose from. I´m thinking of 225/60 ones from Yokohama.

I had alloys on my LR110. They were fine, but whenever i did any serious off roading, i wished i had steelies on.

Besides that, i actually think the syncro steelies look great - so thats a big fat "No" from me!

I am feeling what most of you think, I always think alloys on a syncro remind me of a not very convincing Transvestite....

I have some merc ones on the doka already and although they arnt paricually that offensive I am not to keen. Might ditch all the alloys and get some manly metros on both vans.

I seem to remember being told a few years ago that one of the big advantages of alloys over steel wheels was, they reduced the mass, and this in turn helped reduce wheel hop. If I understand what I was told correctly it should improve the on road ride.
Personally I'm a fan of the utilitarian look of steels, if I was going for allows then I would go for some thing similar to the ones you have Jed, or Audi TT style wheels.
