Well i have just got back from a week in Suffolk, but on our last day i noticed that the Temp Gauge was being a bit erratic, it normally sits about the 3/4 mark when she,s up to normal running temp, however the gauge dropped to the point where it sits when the engine is switched off but then slowley moved up again to about the 1/4 mark and then dropped back down again, while hooking the van back to the awning again it crept back to its normal position But on the way home the following day it did,nt move and now dos,nt seem to work at all, Any ideas peeps.

Sounds like a bad connection on the temp sender or a faulty sender.

Try cleaning temp sender connections and try putting the cable of the sender down to clean metal with the ignition on, if gauge goes up to max it's a faulty sender, if not the problem lies elswhere.

thanks for reply, i will try that out, i,m not to clever when it comes to things like this, when you say put connections from the sender to the bodywork, does the engine have to be running or just the ignition turned on, the red light on the gauge works as it should but the gauge itself does,nt.

just ignition on, the temp sender reduces in resistance as temp increases thus direct to earth + no resistance therefore gauge goes to max and led flashes
could be bad connection at the multiplug at the dash too
mine does it when it's wet as on the syncro the temp sender is more exposed and I have a poor connection which when wet shows as low temp, I'll be reterminating the wire tomorrow, but I'll have to extend it as it's been cut back previously

During a recent trip to pembrokshire the temp gauge was working fine one moment and the next the needle had dissapeared of the gauge. This left me guessing which direction the needle had gone left or right. Pulled over to have a look and found the temp sendor connector has got its spring clip missing and had come loose. Relaxed once more.

Mine behaves in the same way. It starts working properly in about March and then stops again at the end of August. Then it does its own thing until March the next year. It is now doing as you have described above. In the past I have changed the sender and had electricians trying to solve the problem but to no avail. I stopped worrying about it two years ago. I have just got used to it now. It works when it feels like it and is a talking point when it does!

Update. Oooops mine started working again at the weekend and then stopped again. Tis a fickle thing!

thanks again for all the info, looks like i will have a little fiddle and see what comes up Hopefully the needle on the gauge. It seems like this is a common problem for a lot of van owners on here

I have recently flushed the coolent system on my 2.1 dj, changed all temp sensors, expansion tank cap, new rad (old one badly blocked) thermostat, new thermo switch everything i can think of doing i have done.

Problem is temp gauge reads high when driving, fan cuts in ok heater working fine, sombody said that at some point if the cooling system has cooked up it can stretch the spring inside the dash that connects to the temp gauge which can make for a fualty reading..

Can this switch or sensor in the dash be replaced ? or is there something else I have missed...
