I seem to have a water leak from the bottom of the water pump! Diesel 1.6TD. All the pipes are OK. Waters deffinately not running onto the pump but coming from it. Could it be a gasket gone? How difficult/easy is it to replace?

No sorry your pump is telling you that it's finished.. time to replace it.

most likely the bearing seal is worn out

what he said, leak from hole in pump means bearing seal has failed and bearing will soon do, they aren't that expensive; do a coolant system flush whilst you are there, including the radiator otherwise you will shorten the life of the new pump circulating old crud

And dont buy a cheapo one , gsf do 2 one is rubbish the other is twice the price and vag I beleive

Just want to confirm that what I'm looking at is infact the water pump as my knowledge of engines could be written on the back of a postage stamp!!! The engines a Deisel 1-6TD

pic taken from underneath. What I think is the water pump is underneath the alternator. Water is leaking from the area circled.


Could also do with knowing what this pipe is called!

yes that is the water pump and the pipe is the rocker cover breather, connected to the inlet manifold so that any engine oil vapour is drawn into the engine and consumed as fuel, it's an emissions thing

One last question. Been looking at JustKAMPERS water pumps. They do the 'water pump' - J10485 for £19.70, or the 'water pump complete' - J10730 for £36.70! Which one do I need?...

Have you a GSF near to you?.. they can supply VAG pumps

GSF part no 170VG0180

if JK send the wrong one (not uncommon) it's a ball ache to get the right one. Plus they are probably chinese
but get "complete"

I can't say 100% but there is a sure way to find out...take it with you to GSF and compare the two

I'm pretty sure though it's correct if your engine year and code is correct

And looking at your top picky it looks like the black plastic stat housing/cover is warped (they usually do) so get a new one from baxter, not dear and while your at it buy a new T'stat off him then all will be as it should, oh and gsf do 2 pumps one cheapo 15-18 quid and one as kev said vag we beleive for top side of £20, buy this one. not the made in Mongolia one
